Technical Info: IP Ratings

This is a common internationally accepted system for rating electrical/electronic equipment against the intrusion of solids and water.

The IP stands for Ingress Protection or sometimes it is written as International Protection and is followed by two numbers. The first number rates the level of protection against the ingress of solids and the second number rates the level for liquids. The higher each number the greater the level of protection. The standards are specified in AS60529 and EN60529. The generally accepted levels are set out in the chart below.
This is a more specific and accurate method than common terms such as weatherproof or water resistant. Weatherproof can be as low as IP44.

  • 7 Protected against immersion to 1.0m
  • 8 Protected against immersion to a specified depth
